MATCH THE PACK TO THE ACTIVITY

If you are simply day hiking, a pack of around 30 litres with a few side pockets is ideal. A slightly larger pack (around 40-50 litres) is great for scrambling, climbing, or ski touring. If you are trail running, a small (<25 litres) technical daypack is enough to carry all the essentials without weighing you down.

FEATURES TO LOOK FOR

Depending on the activity and the time you will be wearing the pack, there are a few key features that you should look for when deciding on an appropriate daypack:

  • Padding, support, and shaping – thickly padded shoulder straps with a sternum strap will make the pack a lot more comfortable over long periods
  • Ventilated back panels – ideal for those who are day hiking or commuting in the warmer months
  • Water resistant zippers – perfect for wetter climates. Also eliminates storm flaps to keep weight down
  • Gear-lashing systems – allow for bulkier items to be attached via bungee cord
  • Hydration system compatibility – great for those who wish to swap in a bladder and do away with water bottles
