LEATHER is a natural material and selection of the right grade of leather to meet the end use of the boot is an essential and highly specialist skill.
The origin of the hide, the age, rearing and care of the beast and the tanning process are all critical elements which effect the finished performance and look of the boot. SCARPA have over 50 years experience of dealing and negotiating with tanneries to secure the finest leathers and meticulously select the hides they use in their leather walking and mountain boots. The tanning process is a critical factor in the production of quality leathers and is what makes the leather water resistant. Some leathers use traditional tanning processes and ingredients. More expensive leathers like Scarpa's HS12 use a tanning treatment which forces a silicone based ingredient deep into the leather. This gives improved and more durable water resistance to the leather and also allows the leather to dry out faster, even when it does become wet. Leather is still regarded as the finest material for quality walking boots. It does however require care and protection to maintain its performance
Rupert Edward Cecil Lee Guinness (of both Guinness World Record and the Dublin-brewed dark ale fame) established the Scarpa footwear company in the late 1930s, in order to give a future to skilled Italian craftsmen in leather processing. Translated from its Italian acronym, S.C.A.R.P.A stands for Association of Footwear Manufacturers from the area of Asolo.
By the mid-1950s, three brothers hired by Scarpa were able to take ownership, and brought the traditions of their land, their culture, and their beliefs into the business. After an Italian-American in Boston showcased the quality of his footwear to his coworkers, the North American market opened up, and production went from 10,000 pairs to 120,000 pairs within 5 short years.
Love Them - I believe I had the best boots in my gBy: Carolina Banks on 11 August 2015I bought these when I did the 12day Buna Beaches and kokoda Track in October 2014 - love these boots barely needed to break them in, fitted like a glove and true to size as per street shoes - walked 10kms some days and were absolutely soo comfortable and was not in a hurry (like most of my fellow trekkers) to get them off at the end of the day - I paired these with bamboo socks and did not get one blister. Love them cant wait for my next trek. Carla :)
