When it comes to finding the perfect day pack, it can be overwhelming with what is on offer. I find when helping customers in store we can narrow down the specifications required with a few key questions!
Where’s your adventure, what are you carrying and for how long?
From these three questions we can ascertain what capacity is required, if a hip belt is needed, a rain cover, a laptop sleeve, storage options and styling. There are a huge range of day packs available and depending on your particular goal in a day pack - hopefully you will be inspired with these few pack ideas to start with.
Designed for a wide range of bodies with an adjustable airspeed (mesh) harness, hip pockets, a rain cover, and great storage options this is a pack that is chosen time and time again. The airspeed/mesh harness allows for maximum airflow! The Osprey Sirrus/Stratus come in a range of colours and capacity offerings, with differing storage options depending on intended use. The 24L and 34L options have an easy zip top opening access, while the 36L offering has a “brain” top-lid pocket, which enables quick access to all your necessary hiking items!
Why It’s the Best:
This pack works great as a day hiking pack and is versatile for travelling also. The airspeed mesh back panel ensures maximum air flow and comfort whilst hiking.
The Rab Protium range offers close comfort with an air-countour back, rain cover, great storage, and large hip pockets that will keep your phone or snacks nice and handy. This range comes in multiple capacities from 18L through to 35L with top zips and also a “brain” top-lid option. This range don’t necessarily classify as being male/female packs but have designed their smaller frame with narrow dimensions (ND) in mind.
Why It’s the Best:
A super sleek and simple design which easily takes this pack from the trail and through the airport. Fits really well and the large hip pockets are an absolute winner!
Coming from Gregory is another great option in the Jade for the ladies, and the Zulu for the lads, 28L and 30L respectively. Featuring simplistic styling, large side pockets and a dynamic FreeFloat system that moves with your body, preventing sore spots and giving you free range of movement. Both packs come in two sizes to allow a great fit. No rain cover on this one so make sure to pack a dry bag or two or even a hiking umbrella!
Why It’s the Best:
Simple styling with all the required features of a daypack. The Gregory Jade and Zulu packs, are super comfortable and the zipped opening allows fabulous access to your pack.
Now this is a little pack that needs to be tried on. Aarn packs are cleverly designed with innovations of natural balance, movement and shaping. The sculptured back panel moulds to your body shape under load while being nice and breezy. Featuring front balancing pockets to allow quick access to gear/snacks, and all the features expected in a daypack, pole holders, hydration capability and a handy zip opening.
Why It’s the Best:
Weighing in at only 680g this little pack is a firecracker. The U-Flow harness system gives you an amazing ability to stretch, twist, rock, bend forward, even dance, whilst the load stays flush to your pack!
Another light-weight option is the Hyperlite Elevate 22L Daypack. Inspired by their larger capacity multi-day offerings this daypack offers all you need in a frameless pack. Weighing in at 502g, it features a removable hip belt, and comes in 3 sizes (S,M,L). The Hyperlite Elevate 22L has great external pockets and a roll top closure. As with all Hyperlite gear, the fabric used in this pack is a Dyneema composite hybrid which is extremely robust, durable and waterproof!
Why It’s the Best:
502g, durable and waterproof, 3 pack sizes to suit different torsos - this would be a great daypack for Australian off-track day walks and New Zealand.
Because the kids should definitely not miss out on having a great pack to carry their hydration and snacks!
Osprey has great range of kids options including the Tempest/Talon Jr with an 11L capacity and basically a mini-version of the adult style. It is a great option as it involves a hip belt to avoid carrying all the weight on the shoulders. Being more comfortable, kids will be happier to hike longer! The Daylite Jr, with a 9L capacity is greater for smaller day-trips or travel, where a hip belt is not needed.
