Keen started in 2003 with a sandal that had a rubber cap over the toes, and that toe bumper is still across most of the range today. The rest of the collection grew out of the same idea - room across the front of the foot, a waterproof membrane where it earns its place, and outsoles cut for wet rock rather than gym floors. The Newport sandal is still in the range more than twenty years on, which tells you the design was right the first time. Two things decide this: how much of your foot you want covered, and how far you plan to walk in them. A sandal for around camp and in and out of the water is a different shoe from one you'll do ten kilometres in.
Water, rocks, and river crossings: Newport H2
The original, and still the one we'd pick if the day involves getting wet. Polyester webbing upper that washes and dries, a closed toe cap so you can kick a rock without thinking about it, and a siped outsole that holds onto wet stone.
Walking distance in a sandal: Hyperport H2
The same closed-toe idea with a thicker, softer midsole under it. If your complaint about hiking sandals is that your feet ache after a few hours, this is the one to try. Bulkier to pack than the Newport.
Light and simple: Whisper
A women's sandal at well under 250 grams, with bungee lacing instead of straps and buckles, so it cinches one-handed. Less coverage and less sole than the Newport, which is exactly why it's the one that goes travelling.
Open ground and dirt: Arroyo II
A men's hiking sandal with a more aggressive outsole than the Newport and the same toe protection. Built for tracks rather than for water.
In short: Newport H2 if water is the point, Hyperport H2 if distance is, Whisper if weight is, Arroyo II if it's dirt underfoot.
Almost everyone buying a Keen to walk in ends up choosing between two versions of the same shoe. The question is whether you want the ankle, and whether you need the wide.
Day walks and graded tracks: Targhee IV waterproof shoe
Nubuck leather upper, a KEEN.DRY waterproof membrane, and a shank running through the midsole, so the shoe doesn't fold over rocks. For most day walking on the east coast, this is enough shoe.
Ankle support and heavier days: Targhee IV mid boot
The same shoe with a cuff over the ankle. Worth it if you roll ankles, if you're carrying overnight weight, or if you're pushing through scrub where you want the height. Not worth the extra weight on a two-hour graded track.
Wider feet: Targhee IV wide
Both the shoe and the mid boot come in a wide fitting. Keen is already roomier than most through the forefoot, so a standard Keen is often large enough but definitely try these on if you have wide feet.
In short: Targhee IV shoe for day walks, Targhee IV mid if you want the ankle support.
Keen is cut wider across the front of the foot than most outdoor brands, and that's the main reason people either love them or never get on with them. If your toes feel pinched in most hiking shoes, this is a brand worth trying. If you like a close, low-profile shoe, the toe bumper will feel like a lot of shoe - it is genuinely blunter at the front than a comparable Merrell or Salomon, and it takes up more room in a pack.
Not every Keen is equally roomy. The Newport and the Targhee are the biggest shapes in the range, and the more streamlined models are cut closer. Sizes are US across the range, and our own product notes flag the Newport as coming up about half a size small, so if you're between sizes on that one, go up.
The reliable way to do it is to measure. Stand on a piece of paper in the sock you'll actually wear, mark from heel to longest toe, and check that against the sizing info.

Do Keen shoes run true to size?
Mostly, but they run roomy through the toes rather than long, so a Keen in your usual size feels wider than you might expect without feeling bigger. The exception we flag is the Newport, which comes up about half a size small. If you're between sizes, or coming from a narrow-fitting brand, measure your foot and check it against the size info.
Are Keen shoes good for wide feet?
Yes - it's the main reason people buy them. The standard fit is already wider through the forefoot than most outdoor brands, and the Targhee IV comes in a dedicated wide fitting in both the shoe and the mid boot. If you're buying footwear to manage a foot condition rather than just for comfort, see a podiatrist first. We can tell you how a shoe is shaped; we can't tell you whether it's right for your feet.
Are Keen hiking boots waterproof?
The models with WP or KEEN.DRY in the name have a waterproof membrane, and the Targhee IV shoe and mid boot both do. Not every Keen does, and the sandals obviously don't, so check the product info rather than assuming. A membrane keeps water out, but it also makes a shoe warmer, which is worth thinking about for summer walking in Australia.
Can I wear Keen sandals in salt water?
Yes, and you should rinse them with fresh water afterwards. Keen's water sandals are machine washable - a small amount of detergent on a gentle cycle, then air dry out of the sun. Salt left sitting in webbing is what makes a sandal stiff and smelly, not the swimming.
What's the warranty on Keen footwear in Australia?
Keen's warranty covers manufacturing faults. Separately from anything the brand offers, Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply to everything we sell. If something has gone wrong with a pair you bought from us, contact us with your order number and a few photos and we'll take it from there.
Can I try Keens on before I buy?
Yes. We have two stores - Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast and Brisbane - and both carry an extensive footwear range. You can also order online and click and collect in store. If you're nowhere near either, the 80-day return window is there so you can try a pair on at home on carpet and send them back if the fit isn't right.
