Merrell started in the United States in 1981 making hiking boots, and boots and shoes for walking are still the bulk of what it does. The Moab has been in the range for more than fifteen years, which is a long life for a hiking shoe and tells you most of what you need to know about how well the shape works. Alongside it sits a much smaller barefoot range, the Vapor Glove and Trail Glove, that goes the other way entirely, plus a set of trail runners in between. Wild Earth stocks Merrell in men's and women's sizing, with free shipping Australia-wide and 80 days to return anything, sale items included.
Here's a rundown of the models we get asked about most, and which one suits which job.
Almost everyone arriving at Merrell is here for a Moab, and there are really only two decisions to make: how high you want it, and whether you want it waterproof. Get those right and the rest sorts itself out.
Dry trails and everyday walking: Moab 3
The standard Moab 3 is the vented one: mesh panels, no waterproof membrane, and it breathes properly. For day walks on dry tracks, and for people who want one shoe that also does the shops and the dog, this is the one to get. It is comfortable from the first wear, which is not true of most hiking footwear. It comes as the Merrell Moab 3 Mens Hiking Shoes and the Merrell Moab 3 Womens Hiking Shoes.
The catch is in the name: vented means not waterproof. If you walk through wet grass in the morning your socks will know about it.
Wet ground and cold mornings: Moab 3 GTX
Same shoe with a Gore-Tex membrane. Worth it if you walk in winter, cross creeks, or hike anywhere that stays damp under the canopy. Be honest with yourself about how often that is, though. A waterproof membrane makes a shoe warmer and much slower to dry once water gets in over the collar. Through a Queensland summer the vented Moab is usually the better buy, even though GTX sounds like the upgrade. It comes as the Merrell Moab 3 GTX Mens Hiking Shoes and the Merrell Moab 3 GTX Womens Hiking Shoes.
Carrying a pack: Moab 3 Mid GTX
The mid-height version adds a collar above the ankle. It is not about waterproofing, since the low GTX is just as waterproof. It is about stability when you are carrying weight on uneven ground. If you are doing overnighters with 15kg or more, or you have rolled an ankle before, take the mid. The leather version comes as the Merrell Moab 3 Mid GTX Mens Waterproof Hiking Boots and the Merrell Moab 3 Mid GTX Womens Waterproof Hiking Boots. The synthetic version, the Merrell Moab 3 Synthetic Mid GTX Mens Hiking Boots and the Merrell Moab 3 Synthetic Mid GTX Womens Hiking Boots, is lighter and dries faster but will not last as long on rock.
If you are day walking without a pack, the mid is more boot than you need and you will feel it on the climbs.
If your toes feel cramped: wide fits
Several Moab 3 models come in a wide fitting. Worth knowing about before you size up. Going a half size longer to get width usually gives you a shoe that slips at the heel, which is how blisters start.
The wide versions are the Merrell Moab 3 Wide Mens Hiking Shoes, Merrell Moab 3 Wide Womens Hiking Shoes, Merrell Moab 3 GTX Wide Mens Hiking Shoes, Merrell Moab 3 GTX Wide Womens Hiking Shoes, Merrell Moab 3 Mid GTX Wide Mens Hiking Boots and Merrell Moab 3 Mid GTX Wide Womens Hiking Boots.
In short: vented Moab 3 for dry ground and warm weather, GTX if you genuinely walk in the wet, and the Mid GTX only if you are carrying a pack.
Merrell's trail runners sit between the Moabs and the barefoot range. More cushioning than a Glove, far more flexible than a Moab.
Long days and ultra distance: Agility Peak 6
Merrell's long-distance trail shoe, with deep cushioning and a Vibram Megagrip outsole that holds on wet rock better than most. It is built for time on feet rather than speed. If your runs are measured in hours rather than kilometres, this is the one. It comes as the Merrell Agility Peak 6 Mens Trail Running Shoes and the Merrell Agility Peak 6 Womens Trail Running Shoes, and there is also a Gore-Tex version for winter running.
It is a tall shoe, though. If you run technical single track and want to feel the ground, you will find it vague underfoot.
Road and trail in one shoe: ProMorph
A hybrid for runs that mix footpath and dirt. The foam is bouncier than a typical trail shoe, so it doesn't feel dead on bitumen, and the Vibram outsole has short, closely spaced lugs that grip on gravel and hard-packed trail. If your run starts at the front door and finishes on a fire trail, this is the one. It comes as the Merrell ProMorph Mens Trail Running Shoes and the Merrell ProMorph Womens Trail Running Shoes.
The short lugs are the trade-off. On mud or loose, steep ground they will slip where the Agility Peak 6 holds, so for proper technical trails take that instead.
In short: Agility Peak 6 for long days on proper trail, ProMorph if your runs mix road and dirt, and the Trail Glove 7 from the barefoot range below if you want to feel the ground.
This is the smallest part of the Merrell range and the part people are most passionate about. Both shoes here have a zero drop: the heel and the forefoot sit at the same height, rather than the heel being raised as it is in a normal shoe.
Some cushioning, still minimal: Trail Glove 7
A 14mm stack, which is thin by any normal measure but enough to take the edge off sharp rock. This is the sensible entry point into barefoot shoes and the one to pick if you want to run in them. The Merrell Trail Glove 7 Mens Trail Running Shoes and the Merrell Trail Glove 7 Womens Trail Running Shoes are the same shoe in men's and women's sizing.
As close to nothing as it gets: Vapor Glove 7
Thinner again, and about as minimal as a shoe with a sole can be. Best for gym work, short efforts and people who already run barefoot. It comes as the Merrell Vapor Glove 7 Mens Trail Running Shoes and the Merrell Vapor Glove 7 Womens Trail Running Shoes.
The honest warning, which matters more here than anywhere else on this page: do not go straight into these for a long walk or run. Your calves and Achilles have spent years in raised heels and they need weeks, not days, to adapt. Start with half an hour of walking and build slowly. People who ignore this get injured, and then blame the shoes.
In short: Trail Glove to start with or to run in, Vapor Glove once you have already made the switch.
The easy-on end of the range, and the part that comes into its own over an Australian summer.
Boat, creek and campsite: Hydro Moc
A foam clog that drains, floats and washes clean under a tap. It is the shoe to leave in the car for the boat ramp, the campsite or the walk down to the water. The Merrell Hydro Moc Mens Water Shoes and the Merrell Hydro Moc Womens Water Shoes both run generously. If you normally take a half size in Merrell, size down rather than up in this one.

Do Merrell shoes run true to size?
For most people, yes. Merrell is sized in AU/US sizing and generally comes up true to length. Check out the Merrell Size Guide for more detail. Two exceptions worth knowing: several Moab models come in a wide fitting, so if your problem is width rather than length, try a wide fit instead of sizing up; and the Hydro Moc is cut generously, so size down in that one if you normally take a half size.
What's the difference between the Moab 3 and the Moab 3 GTX?
The GTX has a Gore-Tex waterproof membrane; the standard Moab 3 is vented and doesn't have one. Waterproof is the better choice if you walk in winter or through wet ground. Vented is the better choice for warm, dry conditions. It breathes far better, and it dries much faster if it does get soaked.
Are Merrell shoes good for walking all day?
It is what the Moab is designed around, and it is the pair we most often recommend to people who are on their feet for hours. That said, all-day comfort depends as much on your feet as on the shoe. If you are buying footwear to manage a specific problem (plantar fasciitis, a collapsed arch, ongoing pain), see a podiatrist first and bring their advice to us. We can tell you what a shoe does; we can't tell you what your feet need.
Does Merrell make wide-fit shoes?
Yes, on several Moab models. Merrell's wide fitting is genuinely wider through the forefoot rather than just longer, which is the difference that matters. The barefoot range (Trail Glove and Vapor Glove) is also cut with a roomier toe box as standard, so it is worth trying if width is your issue.
What warranty do Merrell shoes come with?
Merrell's warranty covers manufacturing faults, and the terms can differ between product lines, so the guarantee shown on the individual product page is the one that applies. Separately from that, your rights under Australian Consumer Law apply to everything we sell regardless of the manufacturer's warranty. If something has gone wrong with a pair, contact us and we'll sort it out with Merrell for you.
