Traverse is designed and imported by Wild Earth. We've been outfitting Australians for hiking and camping since our first store opened on the Gold Coast in 2004, and Traverse is the range we put our own name on. It's made up of the small, useful pieces that end up in almost every pack: dry bags and pack covers, titanium bottles and cookware, an ultralight stove, a closed-cell foam sleeping mat and a few trail essentials. Because the range is ours, any questions about it come straight to us rather than being passed on to a manufacturer. Every order ships free Australia-wide (bulky items excluded), and you've got 80 days to return anything, sale items included.
Here's a rundown of what's in the range and who each piece suits, to help you work out what you need!
The choice comes down to how rough the trip is, and whether the bag rides inside your pack or outside it.
River trips and rough handling: Lightweight Dry Bag
The Traverse Lightweight Dry Bag 20L is made from 75D fabric. The "D" stands for denier, a measure of thread thickness, and a higher number means a tougher fabric. It has welded seams and a roll-top closure. Use this one when the bag gets thrown in a canoe, strapped to the outside of a pack, or dragged through scrub. Plenty of sizes available but the 20 litres will take a sleeping bag or a full set of spare clothes.
Inside the pack, counting grams: the Ultralight version
If the bag stays inside your pack and only has to keep things dry, a thinner fabric does the job for less weight. The Traverse Ultralight Dry Bag gives up some toughness in exchange for that saving.
Keeping rain off the pack itself: Backpack Rain Cover
The Traverse Backpack Rain Cover is made from 40D siliconised fabric with a PU coating, and packs down to a fraction of the size of a standard cover. It comes in three sizes: Small for 15-35L packs, Medium for 30-60L and Large for 55-80L. A cover stops the outside of your pack soaking up water. In steady rain, though, water still gets in through the back panel, which sits against you. On wet trips, use a cover together with a dry bag or pack liner inside, not instead of one.
In short: the Lightweight Dry Bag for rough use, the Ultralight one inside your pack, and a rain cover on top when the forecast turns.
Titanium is light, doesn't rust and has no coating to wear off. It costs more than steel, and it doesn't hold heat, which matters for some of the pieces below.
Everyday and on the trail: Titanium Water Bottle
The Traverse Titanium Water Bottle - 750ml is pure, uncoated titanium and weighs 144g. It won't leave a taste in water, tea, or coffee, and it is dishwasher safe. It has a single wall, so it won't keep drinks hot or cold. If that's what you're after, look at an insulated bottle in our Water Bottles & Flasks range.
One piece of cutlery for everything: 3-in-1 Titanium Utensil
The Traverse 3-in-1 Titanium Utensil is a spoon, fork, and knife edge in one piece, and weighs 27g. If you want to carry one item of cutlery and forget about it, this is it.
Eating from meal pouches: Long-Handled Spoon
The Traverse Titanium Long-Handled Spoon is 215mm long and weighs 16g. The handle reaches the bottom of a dehydrated meal pouch without getting food on your knuckles. If you mostly eat from pouches, get this one. If you cook in a pot and eat off a plate, the 3-in-1 is more useful.
The lightest way to boil water: Titanium Stove
The Traverse Ultralight Titanium Liquid Fuel Stove burns methylated spirits (denatured alcohol). The stove weighs 19g and the pot stand 12g. There are no moving parts and nothing to clog. The trade-off is speed: expect about five minutes to boil 400ml, and longer in wind, so a windshield is worth having. The flame can be almost invisible in daylight, so treat the stove as lit until it's cool to touch. It suits solo hikers who mostly boil water. If you're cooking for a group or want to simmer, a gas stove from our Stoves range will be less fuss.
In short: the bottle and a spoon suit almost anyone. The stove suits people who have decided grams matter more than boil time.
The Traverse Ultra Light Foam Sleeping Mat is closed-cell foam. It weighs 240g, measures 188 × 55.5cm and folds flat. Its R-value is 1.2. An R-value measures how well a mat stops the cold ground drawing heat out of you, and a higher number means a warmer mat. At 1.2, this is a summer mat on its own.
For most people its real job is going under an inflatable mat, where it adds warmth and protects against punctures. Foam can't go flat on you, so some people also carry it as a backup, or use it as a sit pad at lunch. For inflatable mats to pair it with, see our Sleeping Mats & Pads.
Toilet trowel: Titanium Trowel
The Traverse Titanium Trowel weighs 30g and measures 20 × 7.5cm. It's stiff enough to dig through hard ground and small roots. Check the rules where you're walking before you rely on it, because some parks ask you to use the toilets provided or carry waste out.
Backup navigation: Micro Nav Mini Compass
The Traverse Micro Nav Mini Compass weighs 5g and hangs from a lanyard. It's for a quick direction check or as a backup. It won't replace a full baseplate compass if you're taking bearings off a map; for that, see our Compasses.
Drying off: Large Trail Towel
The Traverse Large Trail Towel measures 60 × 120cm and weighs 155g. It dries quickly and packs small, which makes it a good fit for swims, campsite showers and travel.

Is Traverse a Wild Earth brand?
Yes. Traverse is our own label, and you'll only find it at Wild Earth, online and in our stores.
What size Traverse rain cover do I need?
Go by your pack's volume: Small fits 15-35L, Medium 30-60L and Large 55-80L. If your pack falls where two sizes overlap, choose the larger one when the pack is usually full to the top or has gear strapped to the outside. Choose the smaller one when the pack is usually half-empty. A cover that's too big catches wind and flaps.
What warranty do Traverse products have?
Because Traverse is our own range, any warranty question comes straight to us. The details for each product are on its product page, and your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply as well. If something isn't right, contact us and we'll sort it out.
Can I use the Traverse stove during a fire ban?
It depends on where you are. Fire ban rules differ between states and between parks, and many restrict or ban spirit and liquid-fuel stoves while a ban is in place. Check with the park and your state fire service before you go, especially from spring through summer.
Does a titanium bottle make water taste different?
No. The Traverse bottle is uncoated titanium, so there's no lining to flavour your drink or wear off, and it's dishwasher safe.
Is the Traverse foam mat warm enough on its own?
For warm-weather trips, yes. With an R-value of 1.2 it won't keep you warm on cold ground by itself. Once nights get cool, use it under an inflatable mat, where it adds warmth and puncture protection.
